This course was created by Professor Barbara Bain at St Mary’s Hospital, in collaboration with Dr Saad Abdalla and the late Professor Sunitha Wickramasinghe. It is a popular course running twice a year for 30+ years. It is oversubscribed by both UK and international delegates, alike. It is now taught by Professor Barbara Bain and Dr Vishal Jayakar with a guest lecture from Professor Mark Layton.
It covers all aspects of peripheral blood and bone marrow morphology. The course is hands-on, microscopy-based module using peripheral blood and bone marrow films and a small number of trephine biopsy sections. All cases are reviewed and discussed in detail collectively after the participants have made their own diagnoses. Key lectures on tropical haematology (parasitology) and red cell disorders are included.
Photographs of all cases, as well as PowerPoint presentations of all lectures, are provided to the participants for the purposes of private study after the course.
